Children walk across a flooding river to attend school

Dozens of school children wade across a swollen river after heavy rain in in Isabela Province, Philippines, on June 2.

Torrential downpours hit the town of Aurora causing youngsters to trudge through the river with water up to their knees after the monsoon season storm. Normally the children go through a shallow part of the stream where they could walk without getting wet.

Local teacher Rheinne Kurstein is appealing for her government to build a bridge.

''This is what we have to endure just to get to school. I hope somebody will help us. It's not safe for the children,'' says Kurstein.
