Church collapses in Philippines earthquake

Footage shows a collapsed church in the Philippines this morning after an earthquake killed at least eight people and injured dozens more.

The back-to-back quakes rocked the northern Philippines just after 4am local time.

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Batanes archipelago, the US Geological Survey reported. About 20 minutes later, a second quake hit the same area near Itbayat at a magnitude of 4.5.

Footage from a village in Batanes shows the devastation caused to local stone buildings, with a church collapsing.

Mr Ricardo Jalad, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), said eight people had died as of 9am in the morning.

He said they were hit by rubble and debris.
