Drivers stranded after swollen river floods bridge in the Philippines

Drivers were stranded after a river burst its banks following a rainstorm and submerged a bridge.

Resident Glenn Mendoza was travelling to work when he was held up by the incident at the Macaiban Bridge in Bulacan province on June 25.

The area was affected after heavy rainstorms the previous evening.

He said: "A lot of us, students and employees, were already running late so some people tried to just cross the bridge even with the water.

''It is dangerous to do that but some people had no choice as it's the only bridge that connects us to the next town.

''Others just waited for the water to subside but it took a few hours.''

The flooding was the result of an overnight heavy downpour that affected the Metropolitan Manila and neighbouring areas.
