Waves crash on Okinawa beach as typhoon brings strong winds and rains to Japan's south

Locals in the southern islands of Japan lost power on Friday, October 5, as Typhoon Kong-rey battered the prefectures still recovering from the devastation of Typhoon Trami less than a week ago.

This video, shot at a beach in Okinawa, shows the violent crashing of the waves.

Officials in one town have ordered residents to evacuate to an emergency shelter. In the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, nearly 20,000 households have no power, local media reported.

Kong-rey is moving north from Okinawa and will near the Korean Peninsula this weekend.
