A Soft-Shell Turtle Running Like a Track Star
Occurred on June 7, 2026 / Longs, South Carolina, USA
Info from Licensor: "Today was the first time I’ve ever seen a softshell turtle in the wild. After living directly on the Waccamaw River in South Carolina for four years, I was amazed to finally see one up close. She chose the riverbank beside my home to lay her eggs. Unfortunately, I think I may have startled her before she finished covering the nest, so I carefully covered it to help protect the eggs. So far, the nest remains undisturbed, which is encouraging. In researching softshell turtles, I learned that nearly 90% of nests are raided by predators within 24–48 hours, so I’m hopeful these eggs have a chance to hatch safely."
