Bizarre 'Kraken Cup' underway in Indian Ocean

The Kraken Cup is a bizarre eight-day boat race that takes place in the Indian Ocean at the beginning of January.

Competing national teams – 22 from 13 different countries – race in traditional African fishing boats called Ngalawas, which are hollowed out from mango trees.

The seamen have to reach different checkpoints in the Indian Ocean off the East African coast using the vessels to navigate their way to various islands, sleeping every night on a different one.
