British surfer engulfed by giant wave in terrifying wipeout off Portugal

This is the terrifying moment British surfer Tom Lowe is battered by a giant wave off the coast of Portugal.

Footage captured in Praia do Norte on October 16 shows Lowe riding on a wave and falling off his surfboard before being engulfed by the wave.

After the wipeout Lowe was also hit by the next wave, the biggest on the set according to the filmer.

Tom Lowe, 34, is one of the most experienced Big Wave surfers in Europe with vast experience chasing big waves around the world.

Praia do Norte beach has become famous for huge waves since Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a then-record in 2011 for the largest wave ever surfed, when he rode a 78-foot wave.
