Multiple rush hour explosions injure pedestrians in Bangkok

Multiples explosions rocked central Bangkok this morning (August 2) injuring two people a day after a suspected bomb was found outside police headquarters.

There were two explosions during morning rush hour at the BTS Chong Nonsi station, one in Phra Ram 9 road and one at the government's Changwattana building.

The blasts were all heard at around 8:30 am where two female street cleaners were hurt and treated at the scene of the BTS Chong Nonsi station.

The government's Changwattana building in northern Bangkok, Thailand, is visited every day by thousands of tourists making visa applications. 

A concrete bench was destroyed after the blast there.

Police closed down the area next to the transport systems while they investigated the blasts.

They were also checking the King Power building in Bangkok - owners of Leicester City - and key establishment figures in Thailand.

Police said all the devices were homemade. At least one of the devices was a ping pong ball packed with ball bearings.

A spokesman of the Thai Royal Police Police, Colonel Kritsana Pattanacharoen said: "There is total four places of the events, first is the bomb at Rama 9, at BTS Chong Nonsri, government centre at Chaengwattana, and also there is a fire in the dawn at Pratunam. 

"Now the police are investigating for any connection between these incidents. And the yesterday bomb at Thai royal police might also be the same serial incident."

Pictures show soil strewn across the pavement at BTS Chong Nonsi station while a second blast there shattered the glass on the monorail sky train. 

Part of a concrete wall was damaged and smoke was also seen rising from an area next to trees lining the road where the explosion happened.

The blast this morning came after a package stuffed with electronics, ball bearings and a green flashing light was left outside the police headquarters last night.

Last night, CCTV showed a young man in a yellow shirt placing the device outside the Royal Thai Police headquarters at 5.35 pm local time.

Roads in the area were closed causing traffic chaos. While the monorail outside the building was closed for commuters, leaving hundreds stranded on the platform.

Colonel Kritsana Pattanacharoen, the deputy spokesman from the Royal Thai Police, said: ''We found a tube used for snacks but inside there was nothing that could cause an explosion. 

''The suspect might only wanted to have caused panic. 

''There was a small amount of ball bearings in both boxes.

"There were two boxes in different places and both were in front of the police department.

''The area was closed and bomb disposal experts made the area secure.''
