Protester arrested in Kazakhstan after insulting Nazarbayev

A protester was arrested in the Kazakh city of Almaty on Saturday after shouting "old man out" - a clear reference to former President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The incident took place during a protest on Astana Day, a national holiday.

Kazakhstan elected the hand-picked successor of Nazarbayev by a landslide last month but many Kazakhs and foreign observers believe Nazarbayev remains the power behind the throne.

At least 500 people were arrested for protesting during the election, which saw Kassym-Jomart Tokayev become president.

The protesters allege the vote was staged to ensure Tokayev won.
