Reckless passenger leans from car door to take selfie on busy road in the Canary Islands

This is the moment an imprudent passenger was caught hanging out of a speeding car in order to take selfies.

Footage shows the man hanging out of the moving VW Golf as it travels along a busy road near Corralejo in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, on April 16.

He was caught on camera for around 30 seconds with the wind blowing through his hair as he posed for pictures.

The reckless stunt sparked outrage from passing motorist Hugo Morera who reported the incident to Spanish police.

The Civil Guard launched an investigation and arrested the driver of the hire car and three passengers at a petrol station the next day.

The man filming himself was the front seat passenger. He was charged with not wearing a seat belt and opening the car door while in motion. Police also charged the driver with dangerous driving.

Both men appeared in court the next day after their arrest and received fines.
