Smashing it! Devotees line up to have coconuts broken on their heads in traditional Indian festival


The annual Aadi Perukku festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, southern India sees devotees line up to have coconuts smashed open on their heads by priests.

Filmed on August 4, devoted worshippers wait as the chief priest makes their way around cracking coconuts open on their heads.

The coconut ritual has been around for a long time and it involves smashing of a coconut on the head of a devotee in a plea to the gods for good health and success.
