Thousands of residents evacuated as severe floods hit the Philippines

Residents in the Philippines were forced to evacuate their homes after two days of non-stop rainstorms caused heavy flooding.

More than 3,000 people in Pantukan, Compostela Valley province in the south of the country were evacuated following the deluge.

Footage shows how locals were stranded outside as floodwaters gushed through the properties a few moments after they went out to the market on August 13.

Local Yurikel Odac said that it was the worst flooding he can remember. He said: "We just went out to get supplies quickly. We can't cross because of the current, that would be dangerous."

The flooding affected hundreds of families with more than 3,000 displaced residents evacuated to a local sports hall and other public buildings.

Kent Simeon of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said that 17 houses were destroyed.

The villages of Kingking, Matiao, Bongbong, Fuentes, Tambongon and Napnapan were severely affected with flooding that went as high as four feet.
