View from flight shows eerie blue grow lighting up New York City sky after transformer explosion

A fire at Con Ed power plant caused the New York City skies to be covered in a neon blue hue Thursday night after a transformer exploded at the utility company's facility in Astoria.

According to local media, the blast happened shortly after 9 pm. New Yorkers turned to social media to post pictures and videos of the strange phenomenon.

The filmer was flying into Newark after spending the holidays with family when she shot this from her airplane window. "I was so in awe I almost didnt grab my phone and capture it but I'm glad I did so I could prove it looked straight out of a movie!" She said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shut down nearby LaGuardia for an inspection after the downed transformer caused power outages at the airport.

There have been no injuries, the NYPD reported.
