Watch as scientists explain how NASA make fireproof tiles for their spacecraft

Watch as scientists explain in detail how the tiles used to protect NASA's spacecraft are made and how much they cost.

Footage shows various employees going through the process needed in order to make the tiles at John F. Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, Florida.

One employee demonstrates the extreme heat the tiles can withstand by holding a blowtorch on the substance for almost 30 seconds.

According to one of the employees in the video, depending on the purity and density an individual tile can cost between $500 and $5000.

This video was filmed in August 2015.
